In the UK, a learner driver holds a provisional licence until they complete their training.
The provisional licence allows one to drive a car with an experienced driver supervising while preparing for the driving test.
After a period of practice with supervision, a provisional licence holder takes both a theory test and a practical test. Once both exams are passed they can then apply for a full licence which permits them to drive on their own.
For the majority of drivers in the UK this is a much training as they undertake.
A large proportion of UK drivers go through the learning to drive process in their late teens / early twenties. Which means they have a lifetime to develop all new bad habits. Many driver get rather blasé towards their standard of driving, all the time believing they are good drivers.
How can I improve my driving?
No doubt plenty of people will read this and think “I know how to drive” or “I’m a good driver” and don’t go any further. You are the people that should be reading further!
Everyone can improve their driving skills, from handling the car, reading the road, observation and/or learning to anticipate actions of other drivers before they act. Don’t be the person who lets their ego get in the way of self improvement, let yourself take some extra training and improve your skills.
IAM RoadSmart driver training
The Institute of Advanced Motoring is a non-profit working to provide additional training for drivers wanting to improve their road craft skills.
I completed the RoadSmart car training, the exam for which with graded as pass or First.
They are run by volunteers to provide additional driver training both in cars and on motorbikes.
RoSPA driver training
Another non-profit offering additional driver training. I’ve no experience with the RoSPA training to compare to IAM Roadsmart. I’d imagine there’s a fair cross over between the training offered by the two.
RoSPA assessments are graded Gold, Silver, Bronze levels (assuming a pass!).
