I currently use an old action camera (SJ7 Star) in my car as a dashcam. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a dashcam that has long enough battery life I could be confident would last for a day out on the motorbike.
Ghost Drift XL Pro
After my usual searching, reading and comparing products, I settle on a Ghost Drift XL Pro for use on the motorbike.
With a claimed batter life over 7 hours it should be plenty for my needs.
Well first attempt has proven rather disappointing. I set it up by attaching to handlebars behind my wind shield to see if it would produce ok video from there while being shielded from the wind.
I need to clean my wind shield if I want to continue with my Drift Ghost positioned there!
Problems mounting Drift Ghost XL on motorbike
The mount came loose after half an hour so had to stop to tighten everything up again. Which I did just a minute before this video was taken.
It seems my current mounting option doesn’t do much for preventing vibration. I’ve ordered an mount that will also mean it’s easier to add and remove my camera from mount. Fingers crossed that will help.
I’m a bit disappointed the box didn’t include the mount I’ve ordered. It’s only a small part and when I paid £250 for my Drift Ghost, finding they skimped on an inexpensive piece of plastic seems rather tight. Then again if they did that, they wouldn’t be able to charge me £15 for a mount!!
The last thing to try – upping the resolution to full 4k. The Drift Ghost XL Pro can record in 4k but it loses some battery life. The manufacturer claims 7 hours rather than claimed 9 hours at 1080p. So taking into account how manufacturers will over estimate these things, it should still do 4 or 5 hours. Plenty.
If guess if those things don’t help then I’ll end up mounting it on my helmet, which I didn’t want to do. I don’t like the thought of stuff stuck to helmet causing it not to behave as designed should I come off.
I’d also be worried about the mount failing and losing the camera.
